What’s so great about clay?
Working with clay is quite literally transformative. It is something that can be dug from the ground, shaped by hand with some water and skill, can be heated to a high temperature and turned into rock! That is transformation.
Stoneware is made of clay heated to a very high temperature (as hot as lava coming out of Kilauea volcano! Once it has been fired, is is no longer biodegradable. It is waterproof, and it won’t pollute the ground if you throw it in the trash if it breaks.
I can express myself in three dimensions with clay, in ways I can’t do easily with other materials. And yes, it took several years of practice to feel that I could make whatever shape I wanted, but now that I can, it really is an awful lot of fun!
